The Colour Dungeon's Lack of Vision - Dungeon Design in Zelda (LANS/DX)
The Colour Dungeon (Or "COLOR" Dungeon for my American friends, appreciate you all) is an optional dungeon first added to Link's Awakening DX and carried into future re-releases. This dungeon is not awful, but in many ways feels like a regression in design that fails to commit to its own theme.

    Okay your review of this section of the game is great there is one fun fact about the fight with igos and his lackies you didn't mention! If you put on the Bremen mask and use it his lackies will march around allowing you to sneak attack them with either your sword or sunlight! Now the main negative thing i have to say about your review is you gripe about PAUSING THE GAME!!! i'm sorry but that is NO reason to complain! pausing and swapping items has ALWAYS been in the zelda series! I know for a fact i did more item switching in alttp but am i complaining? No! I understand the pausing thing can be an issue for some but tbh i see that as a sign of being a lazy gamer. Other than that one little nitpick of mine great review on what might be the greatest dungeon in all of Zelda! Stone Tower shall stand tall as the peak of dungeons!

      I’m happy to agree to disagree there. It’s definitely an issue in other games, ALTTP for sure like you mentioned, and most egregiously the GameBoy/GBC titles. It doesn’t stop them from all being incredible games in their own ways, but it *does* interrupt the gameplay flow for me. (And it is often cited as the biggest issue with OOT’s water temple too) Enough of an issue for me to dislike the game? Absolutely not, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t there haha. If it it doesn’t bother you, then more power to you honestly. I seriously don’t think it makes me lazy though- not my completionist ass lol Thanks still for taking the time to watch and leave your thoughts. It means a lot!

      They’re all on NSO if you have that subscription, and Link’s Awakening of course did get a remake that is very faithful, though with an overhaul to the art direction, but they’re all good ways to play the game if getting actual GameBoy carts is out of the question. Otherwise, I hope you enjoy if you get the chance!

    i think i said this on the WW compilation video but the reason why you have to do the earth and then wind temple in that order is because the hookshot is the wind temples item. and the game pushes you to do the triforce quest last and theres the ghost ship chart and the final combat challenge in the island on the very northeast corner of the map. if the game let you do either in either order, youd be able to bypass saving Medli and doing the earth temple and the game clearly doesnt want you to do that. thats the reason ive at least believe. now, are there ways they still couldve given you the freedom to do either temple first? yeah, they could gate you from getting into hyrule after you save both medli and makar and restore your master sword. they couldve added goodies behind the other items. like if you went to the earth temple first they could leave hookshot targets that lead to goodies or a sun panel/light puzzle in the wind temple for the mirror shield for a silver rupee or something. similar to how TP remake did the stamps. but yeah, it sounds stupid on paper, the only reason i can think of why they would do it that way is to not trivialize the triforce quest.

    • @CaptBurgerson
      @CaptBurgerson 11 годин тому

      The thing is that you can start into and do most of the triforce quest before the wind temple, though yes you do need the hookshot to complete it. A simpler solution would be to double down on that. Some triforce pieces already require the hookshot. Make at LEAST one require the mirror shield as well. Then both earth and wind temples need to be completed. Easy

    • @Brockbuiltmore
      @Brockbuiltmore 11 годин тому

      when you think about how the earth and wind temples are in the gamecube version AND the Wii U version, the temples have nothing to do with each other. they probably couldve made tweaks like that in the wii U version but in the original, maybe it was the same thing as to why we have 2 less dungeons, maybe the time constraints kept the team from finding ways to let you stream line the temples and the quest. they at least made the triforce quest more tolerable in the Wii U version but we can only wonder the what ifs

    • @Brockbuiltmore
      @Brockbuiltmore 10 годин тому

      @@CaptBurgerson yeah, outside of the earth temple, the only other use i can think of you get out of it is in the earth temple part of gannons tower and in the labyrinth. its a shame because the last puzzle in the earth temple is iconic otherwise, the mirror shield is basically the wind wakers Spinner...but the piece that stands out most to me with the mirror shield is the one on outset. once you reach the chart the only thing you need the shield for is if you want the heroes charm. but thats just me.

    • @Brockbuiltmore
      @Brockbuiltmore 10 годин тому

      i think its unfortunate that Wind waker has only one particular puzzle that makes you stop and think being the one in the earth temple. it just doesnt have satisfaction when you solve its puzzles the same way MM BOTW TOTK or TP does. and im sure thats the weakness it had when at the time it was trying to be accessible to new fans with its gameplay and art style. i feel WW couldve been a harder game or at least not as easy if we got those missing dungeons or if they did fix the cohesion between the last 2 temples and the triforce quest. but what can you do...

    This is certainly my least favorite Temple, but I don't mind it much since every Zelda game has that one dungeon that's worse than the rest, plus the atmosphere of this place is amazing. I remember seeing the sunset in the background of the pool on the left and the ancient Zora ruins and it made this place feel heavenly, like this really is a source for pure waters across the kingdom. I think my biggest disappointment with it is that water never starts flowing through Wellspring Island in the place of sludge, cause I remember first reaching the place and thinking "man, this place with water flowing through would look stunning".

      I know the part of the game you’re referring to but you may be misremembering it. The implication is not that it the text box is Link speaking. Instead that text is the Ordon villager/parent that you’re speaking to is saying that in reaction to Link. Hence there often being question marks, like they’re surprised and relieved to hear it (I’m certain of this because I double checked my TP footage before replying lol)

    Literally nobody missed this detail! The one thing that most people are missing however, is the fact that there is a frozen region and a Gerudo territory much like in Four Swords Adventures. Basically, really the fact that this sort of Hyrule appearance isn't actually exclusive to the Downfall Timeline as this same sort of Hyrule also exists in the Child Timeline with the placement FSA being in the Child Timeline. It's been over a decade since Hyrule Historia released and a lot of people still haven't grasped the fact that Hyrule looking like it does in one or two games doesn't mean it's in the same timeline and artstyle literally means nothing in timeline placement also. If we're going the logic fans' pure assumption, the timeline would be an even bigger confusing mess when it comes to lore than it already is when it comes to artstyle and geography. We know that not all Toon Links are the same Link. If they were, then we'd have WW, PH, ST, MC, FS, FSA, and TFH all taking place in the same timeline, in the same era. Which would make no sense at all since Hyrule is flooded and gets washed away in WW, ST takes place in a whole new Hyrule, and the Four Swords Trilogy all take place in the old Hyrule, with two of them being pre Ganon. And SS Link, TP Link, and BotW/TotK Link are obviously not the same Link either because that'd also cause serious continuity issues for obvious reasons. Same goes for the classic Retro style Link. Just because Link looks the same or similar as in another game, or that Hyrule also looks the same as in another game, doesn't mean that it's the same Link or that it's the same timeline. Inevitability is nothing new in the split timeline of Zelda. We've seen Ganon return after OoT's era in all three timelines. And let's not forget that the Hyrule of the Child Timeline is the same Hyrule of the Downfall Timeline as they're the same Hyrule from OoT. It's all still the same Old Hyrule, but with changes due to time. So it's likely that the changes to Hyrule's geography that occurred in the Downfall Timeline are inevitable even in the Child Timeline. As already proven by Four Swords Adventures. That all said, there's no reason not to think that maybe EoW could potentially take place in the Child Timeline. Especially when there's two mountains in this game's overworld instead of one. The only other game with this kind of Hyrule to have a second mountain at all is Four Swords Adventures. Which is in the Child Timeline. Maybe sometime after FSA, Hyrule started to look more and more like the Hyrule from ALttP overtime. This game could easily be set like thousands of years after FSA. Hence why it's Hyrule is so much more closer to ALttP's Hyrule now than in FSA. It's also important to note that Kakariko in this game is not the same exact one from ALttP and ALBW, or even FSA. Not in appearance anyways. Similar location but looks more like the one from OoT, but for obvious reasons isn't the same one from OoT. And given how close it is to Death Mountain, I'd say it reminds me more of TP's Kakariko but with the OoT like vibe. The placement of the two mountains does seem to suggest that maybe this overworld is the Drablands from TFH founded into a version of the traditional Hyrule. Implying that this game might be set after TFH, before Zelda 1. However, there are also so many hints pointing towards to the Child Timeline through various CT references and nods that just simply can not be ignored. I have I strong feeling that this is really just gonna be another "it can go anywhere at/towards the end of any timeline" thing with how many references numerous other games there are here. Including BotW and TotK. For all we know, this game could easily end being after even that of BotW and TotK in an even further future of some kind, somehow. We don't know. It's still too early to call, imo, at least for majority judgement. I mean, I'm personally leaning towards after FSA. But we'd have to wait until we see more to really judge what Hyrule, era, timeline or whatever this actually is.

    I have a theory that this dungeon was meant to be a part of zora water works being a decent instead of a climb. However they realized that between the 7 dungeons, they only had 1 Sky temple. 2 surface level dungeon that acted like a underground temple And 4 underground temples. In the game they advertised as being mostly in the sky So they had to have one of the temples to bite the bullet. And water temple drew the short stick and that transition from becoming a sky temple took away its identity

      At the same time, every time I watch ANY of Capts dungeon design videos and play a Zelda game for myself, I’m reminded that the Goods and bads of a games linearity is a double edged sword, especially comparing TOTK/BOTW to the typically thought of as linear games in Zelda, specifically TP. On one end, a player won’t be forced/confined to the story. On the other end, it means you have to make sure the player knows where they could/should be doing. Which is why I like BOTW/TOTW. It gives you freedom but it nudges you in the right directions. That’s the rock and hard place between our companion games. They were there for the story (MIdna, KORL) but also there to teach you about the game (Navi, tatl) but in BOTW/TOTK, it’s mostly all you. It’s not Zelda 1 or adventure of link but that’s the confliction. Zelda likes most franchises in 2024, has to both be welcoming to new players while still being challenging for veterans. It has to balance those that want complete freedom and those that want to be hinted at where to go. Which is why Navi 30 years ago was so monumental. Now, most of the time I’d absolutely look at walkthroughs but nothing beats solving a puzzle by yourself. To a vet, most of Zelda’s puzzles are a minor annoyance. But to someone like me, it’s EXTREMELY satisfying to solve a puzzle/shrine in BOTW/TOTK. Which is the confliction about TOTKs temples with the water temple and wind temple. To someone that played the game 3straight times, of course it might come off as underwhelming, but someone playing this game for the first time would think it’s the greatest thing Zelda came up with. But that’s just me. When we think about how many games Zelda has and how long this franchise has existed, it’s natural fans would be this divide. To me, I appreciate the games sense of freedom but let’s understand that every dungeon has to be dark souls. Not every dungeon has to be OOTs water temple. Last thought: sitting here as someone playing TOTW for the first time, I love it. I think it’s a great MM to its OOT. After playing these games, I’ve slowly becoming a fan of TOTKs/BOTWs freedom and satisfaction of figuring something out for myself. That the biggest divide we live with. Echoes of Wisdom immediately made me think of Wand of Gamelon 😂

    Fantastic job. So true about the lack of creativity in this dungeon. As far as the reward choice, I always pick Red Tubic until you get access to the Sword Upgrade. Then I switch to Blue.

    I remember the DX version on Game Boy Colour. Always went Red. But I have a couple of ideas how the Dungeon could have been improved; They could have iterated on ideas they used in the Dungeons you have been through already. Added a second floor under the first, which is shaped like a Hat or Pants (whichever works better), and part of the design is moving between the two floors, with Doors that open with a specific colour active. Meaning the colour switch puzzles have a lot more significance, beyond dropping a key. Another element could be that some floors change colour as well, depending on the switch state (which there are minimum 3 of) All of this training (because that is what the Dungeons partially do, train you in mechanics) leads to how the boss would change. The floor idea that you gave, but with the switches in each corner. And the boss can also bang into them, to make the colours swap, to give him an advantage. And the edges would lead to a Bottomed Pit, much like the 1st Dungeon boss, which resets the fight. With the exit coming out in the adjacent room.

      Sorry, my joke was the way you spelled it. I’m sure you meant like… rhymes with “bag” But what you wrote is less appropriate… and rhymes with “badge” But on a more direct note, congrats! You’ve just learned that accents exist!

    • @sentientmeat96
      @sentientmeat96 3 дні тому

      @@CaptBurgersonWhat I wrote is perfectly appropriate, as I put it within quotes to signify that it was phonetic. I suppose I could've written it out like how dictionaries show how a word is pronounced, but it really didn't feel worth it for a slight jab. What accent? Are you not a white, native English speaker? Regardless, in no English dialect is that how the word's pronounced.

      @@sentientmeat96 okay so the joke is not landing, even explaining my joke, with the word joke in my explanation, that’s alright. Just trust me that my initial reply was meant to be a funny, and well just breeze past it. My skin colour has no impact on accents. EVERYONE has an accent, literally everyone, regardless of their skin or first language. It matters more where you live: A Scottish person has a very different accent from an English, Australian, or American English speaker, or in my case a western Canadian. “White, native English speaker” can mean so many accents

    I never beat this game. Didn't know the ancient sage was named Rauru and they reused that name in TotK- I wonder if there's any significance to that fact

    I would love to see you play some of the Zelda Quest fan made games and give your two cents. My favorite is Link to the Heavens. It is shockingly well done with absolutely devious dungeons given the limitations of the Zelda 1 engine.

    Now that TOTK is out, I think a massive war that causes the Zonai to descend from the heavens and intervene would be able to be big enough to cause a Dragonbreak. Especially if it was big enough to, say, break the Triforce into multiple powerful stones.
